Most people associate Spain with wine and Iberico ham so it’s no surprise to think it will pose a challenge to us vegans. To everyone’s delight, Madrid is quite vegan-friendly and there are plenty of great places to choose from!
I compiled a list of all the restaurants that I visited and loved plus all the other recommended ones that I didn’t have time to go to. Don’t forget to bookmark this if you’re planning a trip and let me know in the comments if you find a new place to add here 🙂
FYI click on the name to be re-directed to their Instagram or website for addresses, working hours, and more pictures of their food. All the lunch/dinner restaurants are fully vegan…yay!!
Breakfast/Brunch

- Novo Mundo A cute and cozy coffee shop/bakery with a few vegan offerings. I had a great avocado toast and cafe con leche (traditional Spanish coffee and milk, similar to a latte) with oat milk. They offer vegan lunches Wednesday-Friday, sadly I didn’t get to sample those. Bonus: Go on Sunday and stop by the vintage market in the surrounding area.
- Zenith Brunch & Cocktails: A very hip and Instagrammable place that doesn’t compromise the flavor and quality of its food. I had a vegan shakshuka with tofu and sourdough toast. It was incredible!! The freshly-squeezed orange juice is another must. Bonus: Go early because it gets packed!
- Cafe del Art: Cute and quaint, we stopped by this place on our way to somewhere else and we loved it. It looked like the kind of coffee shop where locals hang out. I had the avocado toast (if you don’t know my history with avocado toast, it’s my favorite breakfast) and a butterfly pea tea latte made with Oatly, divine!
Lunch/Dinner

- La Alpargata Vegana: When in Spain, you must eat tapas, and what better place than a vegan tapas bar? This stall inside of San Fernando market serves all the traditional dishes like tortilla (Spanish egg omelet), croquetas, empanadillas, plus many other dishes. They even sell vegan wine. A must!
- Choose Ristorante Naturale: If you only have time to go to one restaurant please go to Choose. It’s a vegan Italian restaurant and all the food we had was delicious. Highly recommend the sangria, carbonara, arancini balls, and pistachio cake. It’s probably one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in my entire life. Plus the nicest staff ever. I would go to Madrid just to eat there again!
- Mad Mad Vegan: This is the place to go if you want a juicy vegan burger and fries. Come hungry because they serve you a lot of food. They’re also the only restaurant where I’ve seen vegan tequeños; a Venezuelan street food that’s very hard to find because it’s a cheese stick deep fried. Amazing!
- Viva Chapata: Another place to find traditional Spanish food plus an assortment of other dishes. My friend and I shared the patatas bravas and we immediately fell in love. I also had a milanesa (breaded seitan steak topped with vegan cheese) which was delicious.
- B13 Bar: This is a famous vegan bar that it’s easy to miss if you’re not looking for it but it’s a must in my book. We had more Spanish tortilla and croquetas plus some burgers. The food was so delicious and satisfying. We got there right at opening and when we left there was a line out the door. That should say it all!
- Avocado Love: I was a little skeptical about including this place because I heard great things about it. I thought it was the coolest concept ever but I was disappointed by the main dish I had. All the dishes in this vegan restaurant are centered around avocado and as an avocado fanatic, I had to try it. But this felt like it was just about the aesthetics and not the food. It was expensive and the food was lackluster. Proceed with caution if you’re going there, maybe I just had back luck with my dish (Grilled avocado). The dessert which was a brownie with avocado ice cream was enjoyable.
Sweets

- Chocolateria 1902: You cannot visit Madrid and not eat churros! Gladly, this chocolateria which is one of the oldest in the city has vegan options and it says it right there on the menu so nothing to worry about. The churros are made fresh and they’re airy and not as sweet, perfect to dip into the rich and creamy chocolate. My mouth is watering as I unearth the memory!!
- Chok The Chocolate Kitchen: This is not a fully vegan bakery but it was plenty of options for us, including cronuts. If you don’t know what a cronut is, it is a mix between a croissant and a doughnut and I loved them. This place did not disappoint so I highly recommend stopping by to satiate the sugar cravings.

That is all the amazing vegan food I had in Madrid. I hope you have a good idea now of what this city has to offer to us vegans.
