Is New York City the best vegan city in the U.S.? According to a recent study by WalletHub, it sure is! The study ranked the 100 most populated cities in the United States based on how vegan- and vegetarian-friendly they are…and New York City claimed the top spot.
As someone who’s visited NYC twice as a vegan, I can confidently say that I’m not surprised. From casual eats to upscale plant-based dining, New York City is a vegan foodie’s paradise.
Whether you’re craving vegan junk food, international cuisines, or delicious pastries, the city truly has it all.
Best Vegan Restaurants in New York City
1. Vegan On The Fly – Midtown Manhattan

If you’re looking for quick and satisfying vegan comfort food, Vegan On The Fly is a must. Their vegan chicken sandwich with seasoned fries is bursting with flavor. Reminded me of a Chick-fil-A sandwich (minus the cruelty).
My non-vegan friend and I loved it so much we went back later the same day for to try the wings, which were insanely juicy and finger-licking good.
2. Beyond Sushi – Multiple Locations

Innovative, fresh, and delicious! Beyond Sushi blew me away. From sushi rolls to dumplings and bao buns, every single dish was a standout.
They now have multiple locations, and I can’t wait to return.
3. Planta Queen

Looking for vegan fine dining in NYC? Planta offers elegant Asian-fusion dishes in a stylish atmosphere that is perfect for date-night or girl’s night out.
I had their lunch deal which includes an appetizer, entrée, drink, and a cookie. The menu can be a bit overwhelming, but the flavors (especially that giant choco chip cookie) make it worth it.
4. Guevara’s – Brooklyn

This Cuban-owned vegan café had been on my bucket list for ages. Although they were sold out of the guava and cheese pastries (get there early!), the empanadas were big, hearty, and satisfying.
Tip: If the weather is nice, grab the food to go and head over to Domino Park for incredible views of the NYC skyline.
5. Le Petit Monstre – Brooklyn

Adorable, delicious, and totally worth the trip to Brooklyn. We had donuts and cake, and while we missed out on their famous croissants, everything else was fantastic.
Tip: Go early because they tend to sell out quickly!
6. Orchard Grocer – Lower East Side
This vegan deli and grocery store is a must for sandwich lovers. Their breakfast croissant sandwiches are unbelievable (I still think about them!).
There’s limited seating, so opt for takeout. I heard the soft serve is great so plan for that if you can.
7. Jajaja Mexicana – Multiple Locations

My first visit here was underwhelming, but I gave Jajaja another shot. And I’m so glad I did because their nachos are some of the best vegan nachos I’ve ever had.
If you enjoy a good cocktail, the margaritas are strong and delicious.
8. Anixi – Chelsea

This is a must-visit for special occasions or any occasion if you’re a foodie like me. Anixi went viral on TikTok and absolutely lives up to the hype. Everything was phenomenal, the Khachapuri and desserts were next-level.
My non-vegan friends were seriously impressed. This was a highlight of our trip!
Vegan-Friendly Restaurants in NYC Worth Checking Out
Dokebi Korean BBQ

It’s rare to find good vegan Korean food, but Dokebi delivers. I had japchae, dumplings, and even vegan kimchi, all amazing. Their cocktails were also a pleasant surprise.
Thyme & Tonic
Near Central Park, this cozy spot offers flavorful vegan options and excellent service. The sangria? Surprisingly one of the best I’ve had—perfect for a sunny afternoon.
Ess-A-Bagel (Multiple Locations)

Yes, it’s very chaotic, but the bagel and vegan cream cheese is incredible. Next time I’d go after breakfast and with some caffeine in my system.
Final Thoughts on Eating Vegan in NYC
I still haven’t scratched the surface of what New York City has to offer. I haven’t had NY-style pizza, which honestly feels like a crime.
