Where to Eat Vegan in Bali: 8 Spots to try in Canggu and Ubud

I went to Bali with zero expectations about the food and I ended up having the best tempeh of my life.

Bali has a reputation for being one of the most vegan-friendly destinations in the world, but if you think vegan food in Bali means pretty salad bowls and smoothies, think again. When I visited Ubud and Canggu, I had no knowledge of Indonesian and Balinese food, so I was completely oblivious to the delicious food I would encounter.

From the ingredients to the sauces to that tempeh, vegan food in Bali left a real impression on me. Fun fact: tempeh actually originated in Indonesia and has been around since the 1700s. Even if you think you’re a tempeh hater, you owe it to yourself to try it in Bali at least once.

Now that I’ve convinced you to try the tempeh, here are 8 of my favorite vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants in Canggu and Ubud to add to your next Bali itinerary.

Canggu

I am Vegan Babe

Asian & Western fusion cuisine

I am Vegan Babe is one of the most famous vegan restaurants in Canggu and I’m glad to report it lived up to the hype. It has an extensive menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner and you can easily eat there multiple times during your trip like I did.

You’ll find mostly Asian-fusion and Western dishes. Every single meal I ate there was delicious, especially the breakfast. I still think about that tofu scramble!

The Sloth Bali

Indonesian & International food

The Sloth is actually a small hotel in Bali with a vegan cafe. It’s located on a residential street which made it a bit hard to get to on foot but I loved it so much I went a second time.

In the menu you’ll find Western dishes like burgers, wraps and pasta along with some Indonesian staples like Mie Goreng (stir fried noodles) and Nasi Goreng (fried rice dish). The breakfast is also pretty good but I preferred the lunch/dinner options.

Inklusiv Warung

Indonesian Food

A warung is a small local shop or eatery that serves traditional Indonisian food and this particular restaurant focuses on empowering the deaf and queer community in Bali.

It was not entirely vegan but had a lot of dishes that could be veganized. The menu shows which dishes can be modified. I ordered the rice dish with crispy tempeh and absolutely loved it. It’s near Echo beach so it’s a great hangout for before or after. I would’ve gone back again if I had the chance.

Kasto Italian Restaurant

Italian food

If you want to treat yourself to some insanely delicious Italian food, you must go to Kasto. This a fully vegan restaurant and they make almost everything from scratch including their pasta.

We ordered a few things to share and the ravioli was one of my favorite dishes, the pizza and lasagna were also delectable. Great selection of wine and ambiance. It is a bit pricey compared to other places in this list but so worth it!

Shady Shack

International cuisine

The Shady Shack is a vegetarian restaurant with plenty of vegan options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I had a delicious (and massive) vegan breakfast burger with a very refreshing iced latte.

I found a lot more whole food plant-based options on the menu like jackfruit, chickpeas, and tofu which paired well with the hippie, bohemian vibe. Overall a great spot if you’re in the area.

Ubud

Unfortunately, two of the restaurants I visited in Ubud are now closed so this is a much smaller list!

Zest Ubud

Fusion & International

Zest Ubud is everything you imagine Bali to be. There are plants hanging everywhere, beautiful views out of massive windows, and the food is truly fantastic. I had a delicious vegan fish dish (pictured) and a passionfruit cheesecake that I still think about. Again, it’s a bit more pricey but it’s so worth it in my opinion.

Pizza Cult

Pizza & salads

I did not visit the physical location of Pizza Cult but my friend and I ordered one of their pizzas to our hotel and it hit the spot. It was a NYC style pizza. The cheese was soft and melty and the crust was perfectly charred. I wish I had more time in Ubud because I would’ve gone to the actual restaurant.

Flourish Cafe

Sandwiches & bowls

I had one of the best vegan BLTs of my life at Flourish Cafe. We randomly stopped there one night after realizing it had vegan options and the food truly surprised us. My BLT had tempeh and a crispy smokey vegan bacon. Even though it was a sandwich, it didn’t feel heavy because of how fresh the ingredients were. It’s a great spot for lunch or early dinner.
